Construction Message

Construction Message from CD's Corner
By CD Perez, Construction Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity of Citrus County

Welcome! Thank you very much for taking the time to read about Habitat for Humanity of Citrus County. Allow me to share some information about our construction team. We currently have, but always need more, devoted and relentless men and women that invest their time and talents in building affordable housing in our county.

Since 1993, these men and women volunteers have dedicated countless hours, and much effort in building homes. We have built many homes, but more importantly, we have built relationships. Recently, we have had a decline in skilled construction volunteers due to health concerns and prior commitments. At this time, we are seeking members in our community that have the time and skills to invest in our program.

By the way, if you think that you do not have the necessary skills to be on a construction site, let me assure you that we have all types of tasks from picking up nails, to handing out water bottles for other volunteers, to holding ladders that keep our team volunteers safe. For those of you that enjoy getting the job done and have some organizational skills, we would love to work alongside you as well.

Habitat for Humanity of Citrus County could not meet the goals set forth before us without the commitment of key volunteers that endure the outdoors in all sorts of weather to ensure that the task is completed. We have been blessed by volunteers and homeowners that continue to donate their time to help build more homes for other partner families.

Four years ago, I was in need of affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity of Citrus County provided an opportunity for my children and me to be proud owners of a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom home. As a result of the fellowship and devotion of the construction team and administrative staff members, I continued to volunteer after my home was constructed, and in due time became a staff member.

As I continue to invest time in the lives of the new homeowners, and with the volunteers that continue to be a part of this program, I feel proud of my fellow team members. I personally would not have been blessed with a home without the commitment of every volunteer and homeowner that attended events such as the wall blessings, sod laying and dedication of completed homes.

When we complete the dedication of a home, the ceremony for the day is focused on that homeowner and their family. Although I have attended many of these dedications, no two are alike because each homeowner brings their own heart and soul to the table as they share the value of being a homeowner. Some talk about how it affects their children’s future, while others share how it improved their self-esteem. If your opinion or knowledge about Habitat for Humanity is simply “building houses”, I am living proof that it is so much more. I invite you to attend one of our construction sites and learn for yourself how this organization builds lives and gives hope to our partner families.

Please consider investing your time, which is a precious gift, to Habitat for Humanity of Citrus County. Not because you need a pat in the back, a cute certificate at the end of the year or even a watch, but because you believe in the cause of helping others by helping themselves. Please call me at (352) 601-6582 and commit to volunteering 1-4 hours a week.

Hope to see you soon!
